SmartThings today announced the immediate availability of version 1.6 of their SmartThings app for Android. This update brings with it major changes to entire way you’ll interact with the app, with a completely redesigned Dashboard, new SmartSetup and a host of changes that bring it on par with the iOS version.
The Dashboard is now central to all of your configurations, providing you with a birdseye view of everything you have currently configured. You’ll also notice that both ‘Things’ and ‘Apps’ are no longer in the left menu. Things is now an option on the main dashboard, with the functionality of that option largely remaining the same.
At the bottom of the Dashboard is a very inviting ‘+’ sign and for good reason. It’s hear that you can enter the new SmartSetup area, which is filled with both information and configuration options. Devices are broken down by category, Locks, Alarms, Speakers, etc. Select any category and you’ll find a list of eligible devices. You can also use the ‘Connect New Device’ to add a device which may not be listed, but is supported.
Within SmartSetup, you can swipe left to view a number of alerts you can receive based on a specific event such as ‘Family Coming and Going.’ These can span different categories of things. For example, a family member arriving at home could trigger a sound through Sonos, a door opening or a simple notification.
Scroll to the right further and you have access to Actions. These are actions based on an event, such as turning on a light when I arrive home or when a motion sensor is triggered. Actions can be configured from within this section in SmartSetup. Finally, the ‘More’ section is a bit of a catch all, but most importantly, it includes SmartThings Labs, including approved submissions from the developer community. SmartSetup also has a search feature, which can help you pinpoint a specific thing, action or alert.
SmartThings has done some great things with this update. When you consider all of the capabilities and device support built into the app, it’s incredibly difficult to simply things. This release is certainly a step in the right direction.
